Author: Kim Slater

Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books (2017)

Fourteen-year-old Calum Brooks has big dreams. One day he'll escape this boring life and write movies -proper ones, with massive budgets and A-list stars. For now, though, he's stuck coping alone while his dad works away, writing scripts in his head and trying to stay 'in' with his gang of mates at school, who don't like new kids, especially foreign ones. But when his father invites his new Polish girlfriend and her son, Sergei, to move in, Calum's life is turned upside down. He's actually sharing a room with 'the enemy'! How's he going to explain that to his mates? Yet when Calum is knocked down in a hit-and-run and breaks both legs, everything changes.

A Bus Called Heaven

Author: Bob Graham

Publisher: Walker Books Ltd (2013)

How did it get there? everyone wonders ... but no one knows. Then, out from the shadows steps Stella, normally so shy. She climbs onto the bus and, in a moment, sees everything that it could become: "This bus could be ours," she says. And so, the lonely old bus – with the help of some colourful graffiti – becomes a hub of activity! People come together to hold meetings, play games and share stories; sparrows nest where the engine used to be and snails make their little homes under the tyres. But one day a tow truck arrives and threatens to take away not just the bus, but everything that everyone has worked so hard to create. Can Stella save the day?

A Child's History Of England

Author: Charles Dickens

This is very long and rather dense but it is fascinating. It is certainly not appropriate for modern children under the age of about twelve and even then, there should be a dictionary to hand. Dickens takes us through the monarchs of England, up to Queen Victoria. It may be rather shocking for some children; it is full of the violence, hatred, and vengeance of kings against their rivals, fathers against sons, brothers against brothers, uncles against nephews, Catholics against Protestants and of course neighbouring regions against each other. Dickens commentary is interesting throughout this challenging but engrossing book.
