Burning Daylight

Author: Jack London

This is the story of Elam Harnish, one of the uber masculine folk hero types that are so often found in American literature. The theme is man’s journey to find out what is important in life. Elam is a gold prospector who goes through a series of experiences in his search for wealth and power but finally gives up his worldly trappings for the love of a woman. It was first published in 1910 and some modern readers may find the portrayal of the classic virile male champion and the women as inferiors, difficult to accept in this day and age. The salvation of Elam is that in the end he finds that he is just a regular guy like the rest of us. It cannot be said that this is the best written novel of the age but it is a good story that may appeal to a wide audience.

Campbell's Kingdom

Author: Hammond Innes

Publisher: Vintage (2013)

'Then the timber finally fell back behind us and the headlights blazed on the most colossal rock fall I have ever seen. And above the slide - high, high above it - towered the black shadow of the cliff face, a gleam of white at the top where the moon caught the snowcaps. Bruce Campbell Wetheral has apparently no future, but suddenly, finds himself the sole beneficiary under his grandfather's will. Stuart Campbell had been an aggressive and obstinate old man convinced that oil could be found in the Rocky Mountains. Now his grandson decides to take up the challenge. But time is against him - the time to stay alive, the time to vindicate his grandfather's obsession, above all the time to save the land itself, and the people, from impending disaster.
