Cousin Kate
Publisher: Pan (1968)
This is one of Georgette Heyer’s later works and is much more serious and darker than her other books. The setting is classic gothic and mention of strange sounds in the night, locked doors and family secrets pepper the plot. The characters include a mad man, who is kept in an isolated wing of the mansion; Aunt Minerva, a callous, scheming individual and the orphaned and penniless heroine. On top of all this, there is the classic romance between the vulnerable heroine and the solid, sensible Philip. Who could ask for more?
