Chaim Bermant was born in Lithuania and spent his early childhood in Barovke (Latvia) where his father was Rabbi. At the age of nine he moved with his family to Scotland and was educated at Glasgow Rabbinical College, Glasgow University and the London School of Economics. A former schoolmaster, an economist and television scriptwriter, he regularly wrote for the Daily Telegraph, the Observer and Newsweek, as well as ‘On the other Hand’, his weekly column for The Jewish Chronicle. He was the author of over thirty books, both fiction and nonfiction. His posthumous autobiography, Genesis: A Latvian Childhood, was published by Robson Books in 1998.
